It is a sign of little intelligance to avoid the questions that are the hardest to answer. You both have avoided the issue by assuming that your “reality” (waking life) is the only reality. If you have investigated the terms of reality as some great philosophers before you (René Descartes, Carl Jung, Meng Tzu) then I would like to know the results of your efforts. I have found the waking life to be only a small segment of true reality.

I believe it is true that the fact that we die is the end does cause many people to believe. That is one of the main factors. Of course there are many others. I have family members that never believed until they god much older and death became real to them. My grandfather was always a non-believer until he got lung cancer and knew he had only weeks to live. Suddenly, he gave his life to jesus.

that hope of eternal life and the fear of torture in a pit of fire from a loving God washed into their heads as children really does stay with them until the end.

The up side is that as years pass by we can see there are fewer and fewer people believing. The more people like me that speak out and the more vocal we become when people speak of Gods in public the more it becomes less acceptable.

Here is an example: I have couple of friends with kids in the local college. There is an area on campus where religious people come and preach and tell the kids what will happen if they don’t believe and the standard crap. I received a text message from both kids within minutes of each other (they didn’t know each other) with both of them telling me how tired they were of these people “talking down to them” and said no one ever says anything. One of them asked me to come out and listen. So I did, but before I went, I put together a list of scriptures and examples from history into a 8 page booklet. Printed 20 of them and used those scriptures and examples to debate the two men. It was amazing, the kids had so much fun and really got into it.

The kids just never had a way to debate it because they were taught that same stuff and to never question. Once they learn it is ok and that we should reason …it was awesome.

I think people look for so many excuses to believe in something they actually know is not real but they want to believe in it. So suddenly, dreams are real…I guess. I think if we have difficulty determining what a dream is and what reality is, then we need medication to stop it…if we want to function in reality. However, sometimes it might be nice to take drugs to give us the experience of dreams being real..haha. maybe that is what happened to some…?

It says they respect people to make their own choice and that they mind their own business. if we believe crashing planes into buildings will please our God but we don’t do it…what does that say about us? It says we are not as delusional and foolish as those that do. maybe if we started making people wear a badge for any and all superstitions, it would help but it is not likely going to happen. what does it say about me if I don’t go door to door to help people stop wasting their lives and giving up their free will for a god that isn’t real? it says that I respect them enough to live their own life and they can believe as they want as long as they are not harming others.

I wish instead of excuses for not passing the bill, christians would think of ways to pass it and help others. they claim it will not help but don’t try. they claim other countries have failed at it and therefore, America will fail. yet others failed in Afghanistan but they don’t apply the same logic for war, only helping others seems to be wrong. we can point out countries that have done well with such a system and we as americans can decide which parts of each system is best and use what works for us. instead, christians just say no and don’t want to try.

To find a common ground here it might help to first go to sleep and try to have a discussion with us so you can determine the difference between reality in dreams while asleep and reality being awake.
